Time to Level the Pay Field
Dear Editor,
Across the United States, millions of hardworking people struggle to make ends meet despite working full-time jobs. The widening income gap between the highest earners and everyday workers threatens not only financial security but also the values of fairness and opportunity we claim to uphold as a society. This isn’t just about numbers on a paycheck, but it’s about dignity, equity, and the future of our communities.
The income gap has been fueled by systemic issues such as unequal access to education, racial and gender discrimination in the workplace, and the decline of wages compared to rising costs of living. Women still earn roughly 82 cents for every dollar men make, and the numbers are even worse for women of color. At the same time, CEOs and top executives see their salaries and bonuses skyrocket while employees at the bottom struggle to afford housing, healthcare, and childcare.
Closing this gap will require intentional action. Stronger labor protections, pay transparency laws, and equal pay legislation are steps we must take. Expanding access to affordable childcare, healthcare, and education will also help level the playing field and give families the chance to build stability.
This is an economic issue and a moral one. A society where people are paid fairly for their work is a society that values justice. We must demand change from policymakers, businesses, and our communities to create a fair economy where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
It’s time to speak up, share our stories, and push for solutions that ensure no one is left behind. Together, we can #LevelThePayField and build a more just and sustainable future.
Sincerely,
Caroline Lam
